The Maple Leafs made a trade and put five players on waivers Sunday as they try to get under the NHL salary cap by Monday night.
That takes Lafferty’s US$1.15 million salary off the books and opens the door for Noah Gregor on the bottom six forwards depth chart. Gregor, the former San Jose Shark, was on a professional tryout contract, and can now be added at or around the minimum salary for $775,000. The slight savings are all-important to the cap-crunched Leafs, even with Jake Muzzin, Matt Murray and Conor Timmins headed for Long Term Injured Reserve before Toronto’s NHL season begins Wednesday at home against Montreal.
