Back to school: LAUSD students hours away from start of new school year. The new COVID rules and safety warnings - now on ABC7

The district has relaxed some of the COVID protocols from last year. Mask wearing and weekly testing are no longer required, though face coverings while indoors are still strongly encouraged.

Students who may have been exposed to someone with COVID will no longer have to quarantine the way they were required to in the past. Students might also notice more teachers on their campus this year. The district hired more than 1,500 trained teachers this school year - that's more qualified educators in the classroom in more than a decade.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho in an interview discussed the challenges of hiring good teachers, saying there are "insufficient" candidates graduating from college nationwide, particularly those with certification to teach special education. "I can tell you one thing. Considering the cost of living in Los Angeles, considering the cost of housing in Los Angeles, it is difficult to recruit individuals into our community," he said. "Nonetheless, for the very first time in over a decade, every single student in every single classroom in Los Angeles Unified will have a credentialed teacher on day one."
