Latinos own and disown 'Hispanic' in journey to harness identity

Despite debates over which term best describes a population of 62.1 million, embracing their identities on their own terms is empowering and necessary.

Even though Saia grew up listening to Spanish at home in Las Vegas, she speaks Spanish with an English accent. But in an effort to embrace her heritage, she continuously works to improve her Spanish.

"I am a descendant of my mom, I was raised with her culture, but I also live in the United States because of my father," she said. But when both terms are put against terms that embrace people's country of origin — such as Mexican, Dominican or Ecuadorian —"you'll find that it is the country of origin term that is most often used by people to describe themselves," Lopez said, highlighting that many of these identities are not mutually exclusive.
