A white resident who spoke at Tuesday's Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting used the N-word, prompting fury from a Black resident in the room. The latter was thrown out.
“We will have order in the room, Nathan,” said Jones, who, after repeated protests from Blayz, threatened, “Nathan, if you’re going to continue to break out, we will ask you to leave. You’re disrupting the meeting.”
Bielecki said of his N-word usage, “I use the term for ignorance,” and concluded his remarks. A resident named Joshua who spoke after Bielecki told Jones, “Shame on you, Patrick, for siding with that skinhead over Nathan.” Once public comment was over, District 2 Supervisor Tim Garman said, “I want to apologize hopefully on behalf of this entire board for language that was used. Racism sucks and there is no place for it in this day and age, and I am shocked that we heard it today.”
District 3 Supervisor Mary Rickert, a more regular opponent of Jones, said, “We need to monitor what is being said in this board room and if someone acts out, the microphone needs to be turned off and they need to be asked to leave. We need to reestablish decorum and civility in this board room.” Jones then spoke, and said that Bielecki had a First Amendment right to use the N-word during his public comment, and said that only individuals who “disrupt” the meeting by speaking out of turn can be punished by the county’s code of conduct. He did not condemn Bielecki directly in the way Garman and Rickert did, but said that in general, profanity makes him less inclined to listen to people.
