Snow, sleet and freezing rain could impact parts of the Southeast as a system taps into the cold air.A winter storm could bring more significant snow and ice to parts of the Southeast and southern mid-Atlantic by late this week, including the possibility of icing heavy enough to knock out power and cause tree damage in portions of the central and eastern Carolinas.
Thereafter, the overwhelming majority of forecast guidance has now trended toward tracking the low out to sea off of the Eastern Seaboard. That has decreased the threat of substantial snowfall in the Northeast this weekend, but it's still worth watching for possible changes.Winter storm watches are now posted by the National Weather Service for the snow and ice threat in the central and eastern Carolinas.
This transition from rain to light snow might progress into the Interstate 95 corridor of the Northeast by Thursday morning. Be aware of this possibility for the Thursday morning commute, from Washington D.C. to Boston. It's possible some light freezing rain or sleet could develop as far south as the central Gulf Coast region by Thursday night or Friday.Areas from east-central Georgia to the coastal Carolinas could see wintry weather develop Friday into Friday night. Snowfall will also spread farther north into the southern mid-Atlantic region by Friday night.
