TheLastOfUs premiere is HBO's second-highest premiere in the last 13 years, beating out Game of Thrones, Euphoria, & more. The first episode garnered 4.7 million viewers. The only show it couldn't beat? House of the Dragon & its 10+ million viewers.
The highly-anticipated Last of Us series for HBO has smashed expectations, becoming the network's second-highest debut in over a decade, beating Game of Thrones and Euphoria. The PlayStation-exclusive video game franchise entered development at HBO in 2020, with creative director Neil Druckmann attached to ensure a faithful adaptation.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, The Last of Us has become HBO's second most-successful TV debut in 13 years, surpassing the premieres of Game of Thrones, Euphoria, and other hit shows. Variety reports that 4.7 million U.S. viewers tuned into the series adaptation of the popular PlayStation-exclusive game across HBO and streaming service HBO Max, per Nielsen ratings and Warner Bros. Discovery's first-party data.
While some of these early critics probably tuned in this past weekend to determine the quality of The Last of Us for themselves, the show's stellar reviews undoubtedly drew in video game fans who were on the fence and new viewers unfamiliar with the franchise. In addition, the Last of Us trailer garnered a staggering 17 million views since its premiere one month ago.
Ultimately, the show's incredible debut episode should retain many viewers for the remainder of the season, especially video game fans who desire an accurate portrayal. According to co-creator Craig Mazin, if The Last of Us season 1 performs well overall, season 2 is feasible, which would presumably cover The Last of Us Part II.
