Parents say they\u0027re rushing to arrange from carpooling, rearranging work schedules and even looking into hiring shuttle buses.
“They dropped a bomb on everybody,” said Michael McCauley, who lives in Corkery and has one son at St. Michael School in Corkery and another at All Saints High School in Kanata.
There are at least 10 children in her neighbourhood who need rides to school. There has been talk about carpooling, but the logistics are complicated. Some parents are making inquiries about hiring a shuttle bus, Santo said. That leaves Berndt in a sticky situation. She and some neighbours are considering carpooling, but she works in Barrhaven and would have to leave her workplace at least 90 minutes early.Article content
“If I knew this was going to happen at the beginning of August, I could have taken my vacation. I have no vacation left,” she said. “The cancellation of bus routes has put many families in a difficult position, particularly in areas where no other transportation may be available,” the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board said in a statement released Thursday.
It’s unknown how long it will take to solve the problem, OSTA general manager Vicky Kyriaco said. OSTA negotiated contracts with nine of 10 bus companies serving Ottawa English board schools, but was not able to renew a contract with Premier Bus Lines, which had served 36 routes, affecting about 3,000 students. It also depends on how quickly drivers can be hired and trained in a competitive job market.
