“Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism,” which explores a wide array of Black-centric history, art and culture, is at Oakland Museum through Feb. 27.

You don’t want to miss this extraordinary Oakland Museum of California exhibition before it ends Feb. 27. With artwork, artifacts, video and music, “Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism” explores the cultural and artistic movement that long operated at the fringes of pop culture but burst into the mainstream with “Black Panther,” the 2018 Marvel superhero movie.

As Afrofuturism looks at Black lives and the African diaspora through the lens of fantasy and science fiction, “Black Panther” depicted a fantasy African nation that’s socially enlightened, technologically advanced and unencumbered by a history of colonialism, slavery, racism and sexism. The Oakland Museum shows how Afrofuturism also encompasses a range of artists: the late science fiction novelist Octavia E. Butler, painter Jean-Michel Basquiat and jazz and funk musicians Sun Ra and George Clinton. The exhibition’s title pays homage to Clinton’s Mothership by allowing visitors to explore a replica of the flying-saucer-like space ship that was his main prop in his1970s and 1980s stadium concerts when he performed with his Parliament Funkadelic ensemble.
