Afghan officials and witnesses report huge explosion and gunfire near offices of attorney general in capital Kabul

Afghan officials and witnesses are reporting a huge explosion near the offices of the attorney general in the capital, Kabul.

Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the blast was in the Shahr Naw area of Kabul, but he had no details on casualties. Two police officials said Wednesday's explosion was followed by a gunbattle between militants and security forces.

Security around Kabul has been tight since Taliban militants announced their annual spring offensive and the group vowed to target Afghan government and foreign installations. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Taliban and a Daesh affiliate carry out frequent attacks in the capital and elsewhere.

The Taliban control large swathes of the country as they negotiate with US envoys in Doha, Qatar without the Ghani government which they reject.
