The Conservatives have been pressing the Liberal government to toughen up bail rules for repeat violent offenders, pointing to the killings of five police officers in a five-month period last year and what they term a violent crime wave. Conservative MP Frank Caputo has also introduced a private member’s bill that would make it tougher for repeat gun and violent offenders to get bail.
He said he’s spoken to the provinces about getting better data, including from the police and the courts, to “get a more accurate picture.”Article content “I expect to hear a certain narrative from police officers, who do their job very well,” Lametti responded. “There are other actors in the system, who also give a countervailing narrative.”
Brantford officers responded in February to an “innocuous” call about somebody who was passed out in a cab, only to find out the individual was supposed to be on house arrest and was in possession of a loaded firearm.
