A mathematician with a flair for provocation is running for mayor of Paris, trying the patience of French President Emmanuel Macron
PARIS—Cédric Villani calls himself the “Lady Gaga of mathematics” because he is both a star in his domain—a winner of the Fields Medal, math’s highest honor—and an unconventional dresser, pairing 19th-century cravats with dazzling spider-shaped brooches.
He also has Lady Gaga’s flair for provocation. Mr. Villani’s campaign to become the next mayor of Paris is roiling French politics and riling the very party he represents as a lawmaker, the centrist Republic on the Move, founded by President Emmanuel Macron.
