The Columbus Zoo made the decision to euthanize the bonobo, named Lady, after a heart condition took a turn for the worse earlier this month.

Lady, who was born in the wild in 1982 but had lived at the Columbus Zoo since 1990, has died at the age of 40. COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 40-year-old bonobo that lived at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for more than 30 years has died, the zoo announced Monday.

“Lady’s care team remembers her as very sweet and reserved,” the zoo’s statement says. “She had an extremely close relationship with bonobo Susie and, even as adults, the two of them would play and laugh like children. Lady was the most beautiful bonobo and a great ambassador for her species.”, bonobo are an endangered species, with an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 in the wild, primarily in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are the closest cousins to the human race, sharing 98.

“After serious complications were noted during recovery, the difficult choice was made to humanely euthanize Lady,” the news release says.
