Labour romps to West Lancashire by-election victory as Tories face historic defeat
Labour has won its third by-election in as many months, handing Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives an historic defeat in the process.
With a majority of more than 8,000 votes and more than 50% of the vote share in the 2019 general election, it would have taken one of the biggest shocks in recent British political history for Labour candidate Ashley Dalton to not be welcomed in as West Lancs' MP shortly before 2am on Friday morning.That shock did not come, with Ms Dalton romping home with more than 60% of votes cast in her name and a majority that remained at more than 8,000 votes.
Ms Dalton - who was joined by Labour heavyweights Angela Rayner, Yvette Cooper and Lisa Nandy on the election trail as Labour showed no sign of taking votes for granted - used her victory speech to bolster Labour's national footing as a party that believes it is ready to govern. She said: "The people of West Lancashire have spoken on behalf of the country. They have sent a message to this Conservative Government. They do not have confidence in them to govern.
