The Labor Day weekend will be a busy time on the Coosa and Cahaba Rivers in Alabama, but there may still be harmful levels of bacteria or other water quality issues to be aware of before jumping in.
Samples taken from the Cahaba River this week show several spots with potentially unsafe levels of E. coli bacteria in the Birmingham metro area.
Five others showed moderately high E coli levels. Those are: the Highway 280 Bridge in Birmingham, Cahaba Beach Road, Loch Haven Dog Park, Bains Bridge, and the Home Depot – Trussville.The lone spot with a red alert on the Coosa was at Little Canoe Creek, east of Springville. Coosa Riverkeeper warns however to be aware that multiple spots on the Coosa showed low levels of dissolved oxygen, which could mean an increased risk of fish kills.
