While drivers are paying more than they did for gas during the traditional end-of-summer weekend in 2021, prices have plummeted from record highs after Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine threw global energy markets into chaos. Soaring crude prices translated into record high prices at Houston-area gas stations, where they peaked in mid-June at $4.64 per gallon, according to the fuel-price tracking service GasBuddy. Until this year, the average price of a gallon of gas in Houston had never risen past $4.
