The two sides are scheduled to participate in all-day bargaining sessions Monday and Tuesday of next week.
County officials in a statement released Friday stressed that operations in the affected departments are still up and running.
“Negotiations are ongoing and the county remains hopeful of reaching a fair and fiscally responsible contract with our labor partners,” the statement said. “Today’s authorization vote by SEIU is not a strike and services to the public are continuing without interruption.” Specific wage proposals have not been released. But Ileana Meza, the union’s bargaining policy chair, described the county’s latest contract offer as “a slap in the face” given the sacrifices made by frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation.Consumer prices rose 8.5% for the year ended March 2022. Green said workers are seeking at least an 8.5% pay hike to keep pace with increased costs.
“The county needs to acknowledge that prices have gone up on everything,” he said. “Our motto is “respect us, protect us … and pay us.’ We have workers who can’t afford gas to drive to their jobs. It’s unbelievably sad.” SEIU spokeswoman Roxane Marquez said the county’s past cost-of-living increases have averaged around 2% a year.
