Some of Ukraine’s allies have signalled willingness to provide jets. The Netherlands is one of several European countries with F-16s and Dutch foreign minister, Wopke Hoekstra, said requests would be considered with “an open mind.”the company was “ramping production” to backfill any countries that chose to supply Ukraine.
But the US, which holds the largest stocks of F-16s and strong influence over the coalition behind Ukraine, may prove a roadblock. The White House has rebuffed previous requests and is likely to do so again, according to John A Parachini, a military intelligence specialist at US think-tank RAND Corporation who attends State Department briefings on Ukraine.. Neither has there been any indication “that they would be transferred at this stage”.“[Concern about] escalation is clearly part of that,” says Mr Parachini. “But I would also point to the cost of fighter aircraft.
