I cannot help but be bemused by the way this is all playing out. Journalists not at Global News or the Globe and Mail are openly frustrated at not being able to verify the source material for the allegations, while feeling compelled to match the reporting. Politicians are exasperated that anyone would dare to doubt their word.from the Angus Reid Institute showed two-thirds of Canadians think the Chinese government “probably” or “definitely” tried to meddle.

Although the pandemic highlighted it, we’ve known for a while that a significant number of Canadians are susceptible to rumour and innuendo. We are living through a period of unprecedented misinformation and disinformation. It is in the moist, murky, doubtful darkness of things that conspiracy theories thrive. Not to gauge the impact of these latest revelations on this susceptible cohort would represent a failure to measure the breadth and scope of the problem.

Instead, Canadians are lectured over the difference between intelligence and facts. A deputy minister testifying before a parliamentary committee said acting on intelligence that isn’t proven fact leads to things like the wrongful U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. True. But failing to act on intelligence that couldn’t be proven was also what led to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.Article content
