Hackett’s inclusion on the trip for the Jets probably is significant. Because Saleh runs New York’s defence, Hackett will be chief offensive strategist and play-caller for the Jets this season. He was Green Bay’s offensive coordinator in the first three seasons of head coach Matt LaFleur’s tenure there, 2019-21, before his disastrous one-season stint in 2022 as Denver Broncos head coach.
The Jets hired Hackett on Jan. 26, exactly one month after the Broncos dumped him with two games remaining in his inaugural season. It is no secret that Rodgers is a high-maintenance prima donna who best succeeds on the field only if he trusts and respects his top offensive coaches, and after they give him a big say in scheme and play design. He’d get that with Hackett.
Another important factor with the Jets’ flirtation with Rodgers is this, as I wrote the other day. Is it a sign that the 39-year-old has made a definitive decision to play in 2023? For somebody? Sure better be. Until a trade goes through, or until Rodgers expresses as much publicly, we’ll just have to presume that the answer is yes, that not even the melodramatic Rodgers would be so reckless and selfish as to string the Jets along to this point if he weren’t serious about coming back.
Even if the Jets and Rodgers agree to a marriage for 2023 and possibly beyond, trade terms plus financial terms would have to be sorted out between the Jets and Packers. Hence, it’d be a three-party discussion and decision.The Packers, for their part, seem ready to move on from Rodgers, who turns 40 in December. As with the end of the Brett Favre era in Green Bay, circa 2007-10, one team and one market can only take so much melodrama from one out-of-control ego.
