The overlap in stores in several markets, including Denver and Dallas-Fort Worth, is a major concern and could derail the companies’ plans. In the meantime, Kroger and Albertsons, which in addition to Tom Thumb also owns local Market Street stores, are moving ahead with each company’s remodeling and expansion plans.
The 122,000-square-foot Kroger store will have 34,000 square feet of additional space for services and restaurants plus three one-acre pads, Palmer said. The new Kroger store isn’t far from an H-E-B store under construction in far north Fort Worth at Heritage Trace Parkway and North Riverside Drive. The H-E-B store is in about midway between the new Kroger and an existing one on N. Tarrant Parkway.
