The Cincinnati-headquartered grocery chain offers employees up to $4,000 in travel benefits, which can be used to access a legal abortion.

"At The Kroger Family of Companies, we strive to ensure our associates have access to a wide variety of benefits that provide value in their lives today and in the future," a company spokesperson wrote in an email.

The policy is not new, Kroger said, but it was clarified to employees earlier this month after many asked about"their access to safe and high-quality reproductive care." The overturning of Roe v. Wade is expected to prompt more than 20 states to ban abortion, according to a study by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group. Kentucky was one of 13 so-called trigger law states where abortionIn addition to Kroger stores, the Cincinnati-based grocer operates several regional supermarket chains in 35 states, including Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, Ralphs, Mariano's, Fry's, Smith's, King Soopers, QFC and others.
