Russia’s envoy to the UN has accused the West of wanting to destroy the country. Vassily Nebenzia tried to justify Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it had been necessary to defend his country’s identity and the security of its future.
Kremlin envoy Vassily Nebenzia’s comments come as the year anniversary of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine approaches Vassily Nebenzia made the comments at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday, saying that Putin’s invasion ofAddressing Western diplomats, Nebenzia said: ‘We had not choice other than to defend our country – defend it from you, to defend our identity and our future.
The UN Security Council represents the only forum in which Russian diplomats regularly meet with Ukrainian officials and their supporters from Western states. Nebenzia said: ‘You knew very well that the Minsk process for you is just a smoke screen, so as to rearm the Kyiv regime and to prepare it for war against Russia in the name of your geopolitical interest.’
He further said that Western attitudes toward his country were characterised by a ‘deep Russophobia’ and a ‘determination to destroy my country, using others if possible.’
