Pitcher Matt Waldron continues knuckleball transformation as San Antonio Missions open Double-A season
San Antonio Missions’ Catcher Chandler Seagle , left, Pitcher Matt Waldron , right, talk in the dugout at Nelson Wolff Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, on April 6, 2022. The Missions are starting their season this Friday.During a throwing session amid his first spring training with the San Diego Padres last season, Matt Waldron decided on a whim to change things up and toss a knuckleball.
The San Antonio Missions open the Double-A season Friday at the Corpus Christi Hooks, and Waldron is scheduled to take the mound Saturday, continuing a transformation that remains a work in progress. San Diego’s staff assured him they would be patient through the process, viewing his stats as a secondary concern.
“They were very helpful. I took notes on just about everything they said,” Waldron said. “Controlling the top half of the ball helps get that movement at the very end. If I get that movement at the very end and it’s in the strike zone, that’s very effective.” “It always makes me a little bit nervous behind the plate catching him, but it also makes it more exciting,” Seagle said. “It’s more entertaining seeing guys’ reactions when he does throw it. Hitters will laugh at it, like, ‘How in the world am I supposed to hit that?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know. I can’t even catch it.’ ”
“That presents even more of a challenge,” Wellman said. “You can’t just go up there and look knuckleball constantly. If he figures it out or the catcher figures it out, you’re going to get about 95 at your knees, and that makes it tough, too.”
