“I don’t try to teach our students what to think, we want to engage them in the process of how to think, how to engage, how to inquire.”
CLEVELAND, Ohio - During a sermon in 1959, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Science gives man knowledge, which is power,” and that is the theme of the 19 News commemorative MLK special.
The goal of many educators across Northeast Ohio, is to make sure future generations realize the meaning behind Dr. King’s words. 19 News anchor Shannon Smith sat down for a Q&A with Dr. Michael Baston, the president of Cuyahoga Community College, about why knowledge is power.“When you hear knowledge is power, what does that mean to you?”“The idea that if you know better you can do better, that’s what it means to have knowledge as a powerful source of inspiration motivation and ultimately perspiration.”Dr. Baston:
“As president of Cuyahoga Community College, for me, making sure that every student has the information and the opportunity to think and grow and learn and change and develop. It’s beneficial not only for them as individuals, but for the vitality of our community.”“When you hear Dr. Martin Luther King and every year we celebrate him, we try to all throughout the year -- what does it mean to you, his legacy?”“Well, I am his legacy.
