Writer/director Rian Johnson confirms the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery title was inspired by the 1968 Beatles song of the same name.

Writer/director Rian Johnson confirms the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery title was, in fact, inspired by the 1968 Beatles song of the same name. Shortly after his controversial installment into the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi, Johnson wrote and directed a murder mystery, Knives Out, which follows Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a master detective investigating the death of a renowned crime novelist and family patriarch.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Last year, it was surprisingly revealed that Netflix paid a whopping $469 million to secure the rights to two Knives Out sequels with Johnson and Craig returning. Due out this December 23, Knives Out 2 also stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death. This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass. “There’s got to be some good glass songs.

Soon after Knives Out 2's title reveal, fans began speculating what Glass Onion could refer to, and many even suggested it could be a reference to the popular Beatles' song off the White Album. Now, Johnson's comments confirm that many fans were indeed right.

While Johnson got the idea for Knives Out 2's title from The Beatles song, what Glass Onion refers to in the context of the film remains a mystery. It is likely a reference, in some way, to Detective Blanc peeling back the layers of a new mystery, like an onion, though the answer is ultimately hiding in plain sight, clear as glass. The enigmatic title has sparked plenty of intrigue among fans.
