The rookie guard could miss two months, just as he was poised to seize a rotation spot

Guard Blake Wesley torn the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sunday against the Timberwolves and the rookie will have to sit out six to eight weeks. When Spurs coach Gregg Popovich left the AT&T Center after Sunday’s win over Minnesota, he was hopeful rookie guard Blake Wesley’s left knee injury would turn out to be something minor like a bone bruise.

Wesley made his NBA debut in Friday’s victory over Chicago, the same day Primo was waived, and scored 10 points in 15 minutes. He was off to an active start again Sunday against Minnesota until the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, when he landed awkwardly after being fouled by the Timberwolves’ Jaden McDaniels.

With Primo gone and Wesley injured, ball-handling with the Spurs’ second unit could prove to be something of an adventure beginning with Wednesday’s game against Toronto. For their sake, as well as Wesley’s, the Spurs are hoping the next six to eight weeks pass quickly.
