SAN FRANCISCO — A stoic Klay Thompson sat in the tiny visitors’ locker room in Portland after the Warriors clinched a postseason berth by winning their regular-season finale, seemingly unfazed by the joyful noise surrounding him.
But those emotions were quickly numbed by Thompson’s never-ending desire for more. The iconic words of his idol Kobe Bryant rang loud in his head: “Job’s not finished.” He just needed patience and time, but instead, he was met with a storm of criticism in the wake of one of the poorest starts to a season of his career.Only a few games into the season, after a bad night led to his ejection in Phoenix, Charles Barkley said Thompson was “not the same guy” after his injuries.
Thompson was at his peak when he tore his ACL in the 2019 NBA Finals. Right as he was about to return to action from that year-long recovery, he ruptured his Achilles in a pick-up game. The process had to start again, pushing him to his physical and mental limits. “It almost sucks more to see him go through it because you have no control over someone else’s journey or destiny,” Trayce said this week. “You can help them as much as you can but to see him go through it was tough.”
