, such casting did not in any way mean that the actors, who were just becoming adults, were under any obligation to disclose their sexuality publicly. Not only is our sexuality a part of us that is intrinsically personal, it may also be a part of our identity many of us do not wish to label publicly. Sexuality itself exists on a spectrum. Then there may be people who choose not to publicly label themselves because they are in the process of figuring out their sexuality in the first place.
That should have been the end of it, and yet it wasn’t. After being seen with people of the opposite sex, rumours started to swirl that Connor was in fact “queerbaiting” – a term that describes someone insinuating that they are LGBTQIA+ for their own gain, despite not actually being part of the community. It’s an accusation that has been levelled at other big stars, such as Harry Styles.
For one thing, it implies that the individual owes you an answer to your question about their sexuality. They do not. It also suggests that declining to publicly label your sexuality is wrong. It is not. In Connor’s case, it insinuates that being seen with someone of the opposite sex leaves no room for someone to be bisexual or pansexual, and it assumes that being with someone of the opposite sex while identifying in such a way is wrong.
