Residents want bylaw requiring written permission from adjacent landowners

The Kemps were among a group of residents who camped out on a recovering clearcut in Burlington in 2020 and again this past fall, preventing the aerial application of glyphosate-based herbicide. The subject property, P.I.D. 55077747, located off McNally Road, was one of 13 forestry sites between Kings and Digby counties approved by the provincial Department of Environment and Climate Change to have herbicide applied by a Sept. 30, 2022, deadline.

This map compiled by Shanni Bale shows glyphosate aerial spray sites across mainland Nova Scotia approved by Nova Scotia Environment in 2022. CONTRIBUTED Doug said it’s frustrating that municipalities have been rendered powerless to make their own decisions on the use of aerial herbicide for forestry management practices. He said concerned residents would camp out on the subject property in Burlington again this year if it is approved for spraying.

In December, Muttart wrote to the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities to solicit the federation’s support in lobbying the provincial government to give the issue further study, openly and in consultation with tree farmers and communities alike. He said it isn’t a small group of people, as there are about 5,000 residents and 2,000 homes on the North Mountain. Killam said he is sure the residents don’t want to have to camp out again this coming spray season.
