Burkle bought the Pittsburgh Penguins out of bankruptcy with Mario Lemieux in 1999 and last year they sold their majority interest in the franchise to the Fenway Sports Group for $875 million.
Ranadivé, 65, made a bid to purchase London-based Chelsea FC last year, but the club sold for $3.2 billion to Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.Article content When NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was in Ottawa last month, he said there were “about a half-dozen” bids for the franchise. Ranadivé is the seventh potential owner to make a visit to the city. Those include Toronto-based billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and representatives of his group were in town to watch the club’s 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of a sellout crowd of 20,057 on April 1st.
Jeffrey and Michael Kimel of Toronto-based Harlo Capital were in early April, while an unnamed First Nations group attended a game March 27th against the Florida Panthers. Adding Ranadivé to the mix is interesting. There has been a lot of talk about the Senators moving to a new downtown arena at LeBreton Flats and he has tackled this kind of project with Sacramento.
