London Fashion Week veteran Ashish Gupta teases the details behind his first major retrospective exhibition, opening on 1 April at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow.
The social and political touch points Ashish has been inspired by over the years are also highlighted, such as a T-shirt emblazoned with the playful mantra “More Glitter, Less Twitter”, originally made as a reaction to President Trump’s terrifying victory in the US election in 2016, and the “Immigrant” T-shirt, created in response to the Brexit referendum. Another key moment from his autumn/winter 2017 show,, was an homage to the LGBTQ+ community and is given an entire section of its own.
Scotland hopes that the exhibition becomes a source of inspiration for budding creatives. “I never expected to be still doing this 22 years later, because it’s such a difficult thing to sustain, in a way,” shares Ashish. “I feel very privileged that I am in a position where I can do something I’ve always wanted to do and that I really love and actually make a living out of it. [My work] brings a lot of pleasure to people.
