Kids have school this Saturday in N.J.’s third-largest district

This Saturday will be a school day in New Jersey’s third-largest city, though students will be learning from home rather than in their classrooms. Paterson has scheduled a makeup day for its approximately 25,000 students, with students receiving remote instruction from 8:20 a.m. to 1 p.m. The decision was announced Dec. 21, one day before the K-12 district, citing rising COVID-19 cases, announced a switch to remote instruction following the holiday break that remains ongoing.
District spokesperson Paul Brubaker said it is making up for a canceled school day Oct. 26, when Paterson canceled classesSaturday initially was set aside for in-person instruction, since the plan was for students to return to their classrooms four days earlier, and virtual makeup days stemming from weather-related closures ordinarily do not count toward the
