Former San Diego prep stars now meet on big stage

Since the WNBA was founded in 1996, only six players from San Diego high schools have played in the league. Now two players in the next generation — guard Kelsey Plum of La Jolla Country Day and forward Dijonai Carrington of Horizon Prep — will square off against each other, starting Sunday in the best-of-7 WNBA Championship.Plum, the college player of the year at Washington and the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2017, starts for the Las Vegas Aces.

Carrington comes off the bench for the Sun, averaging 6.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 17.5 minutes during the regular season. Later that season, Plum put up another 33 and had 17 rebounds in a 69-47 win. Carrington had 11 points and five rebounds.Horizon lost to Sierra Canyon on the SoCal Division V championship game.

“It’s going to be a great series,” Bamford said. “Obviously, Kelsey is a leader of the Aces. But Dijonai is the X Factor. She’s athletic. She comes off the bench and gives the Sun energy.”Jim Plum, Kelsey’s father, was a quarterback at San Diego State from 1983-86. Mother, Katie, played volleyball at UC Davis. Sisters Caitlyn and Lauren played volleyball at UC Davis and Oregon. Brother Dan was a tight end at UC Davis.
