Kansas State University outlined plans to fight racial injustice on campus, days after the football team threatened a boycott in response to a student’s racially insensitive tweet.
days after the football team threatened a boycott in response to a student’s racially insensitive tweet.
K-State president Richard B. Myers announced the measures in a post on the school’s website. Though the statement does not mention the football players’ requests specifically, the concerns voiced by the student athletes clearly made an impact. “These initial steps have been based on the many voices heard so far; we will continue to listen and develop actions based on the many voices in our community,” Myers wrote.
Several Wildcats players wrote a letter on Saturday demanding the university take action to address racism on campus. “We are demanding that Kansas State University put a policy in place that allows a student to be dismissed for displaying openly racist, threatening or disrespectful actions toward a student or groups of students," the players said in the letter they posted on social media."We have resolved that we cannot play, practice or meet until these demands are heard and actions taken. We love Kansas State, but we must stand together and protect all students moving forward.
