If you’ve seen what seems like unusually large swarms of small birds swooping over and feeding on insects in the Fox River and other waterways leading to it, you’re not alone.

“I, too, have noticed an abundance of swallows around the St. Charles and Geneva dams on the Fox River lately — tree swallows, barn swallows, and northern rough-winged swallows,” said John Sprovieri, a Geneva resident and president of the Kane County Audubon Society.Experts are exactly sure why the numbers up but local Audubon Society members plan on doing a bird counts to determine just how many are in the area.

“It does seem the birds are more prevalent this year than previous ones,” South Elgin Communications Specialist Craig Pierce said. “Several people working here at village hall have commented about it as well.”“I don’t know of anyone who has more than anecdotal information just comparing this year to previous years,” Pierce said. “We’ve speculated with all kinds of rationales, but we’re mostly hoping all of this insect-eating will make for fewer river bugs later this spring and summer.

He speculated the particularly cool, overcast April weather might have something to do with what’s happening now.
