LUXEMBOURG - Britain must reach a Brexit agreement with the EU by the end of Tuesday so it can be approved at a leaders’ summit this week, the bloc’s officials and diplomats said, otherwise Britain’s scheduled departure date of Oct. 31 could be pushed back.
Finland’s EU minister said leaders at the EU summit on Thursday and Friday would discuss delaying the Brexit date beyond Oct. 31. The main sticking point remains the border between EU-member Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland: how to prevent it becoming a backdoor into the EU after Brexit without erecting controls that could undermine the 1998 peace agreement that largely ended three decades of sectarian violence.
British Brexit Minister Stephen Barclay struck a positive note as he arrived in Luxembourg, telling reporters: “Detailed conversation are underway and a deal is still very possible.”
