Fearless Bennedict Mathurin keeps Pacers from blowing 25-point lead.
INDIANAPOLIS -- There were moments during the Pacers' nightmare third quarter where heads started to hang and frustration started to show, and for good reason.
The Pacers were outscored 33-19 by the Warriors in the third quarter, but Mathurin scored 11 of their points despite playing only half of the quarter. No one else on Indiana's roster scored more than three in the period. He was 3 of 4 from the field, 2 of 2 from 3-point range and 3 of 3 from the line. The rest of the Pacers were a combined 3 of 18, 1 of 10 and 1 of 2, respectively. The Warriors never did take the lead.
The No. 6 overall pick from Arizona was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for October and November. In his first 21 games of the season, he averaged 19.2 points per game. He scored at least 20 points 11 times and cracked 30 twice. In his first seven games of December, however, he'd failed to crack it even once. He was averaging 12.7 points per game in that stretch and had been held to single-digit scoring just once, but he wasn't particularly efficient, making just 35.
"The spacing of the game is something it takes a while for rookies to get," Carlisle said."But he's learning about it. The thing I love most about him is he stays in his process. He's undeterred. A few missed shots don't bother him. He keeps attacking and he keeps playing his game, and that's what a professional does."
Mathurin got on the floor with 6:03 to go in the quarter, and on his third possession, he took a pass from forward Jalen Smith at the top of the key, bolted around Warriors guard Dante DiVincenzo and through center Kevon Looney for a driving layup and a foul. The Warriors had cut the Pacers lead to 80-77, but Mathurin got it back to six poins.
