Smollett was charged in February 2019, though those charges were dropped a month later, and he was indicted on the charges he ultimately faced trial over in February 2020.

I do not trust the police.” Theis said Smollett wanted to stage the attack on himself because he received a threatening letter at the studio where he filmedto “fake beat him up,” and he paid them for their services. Smollett denied this when he took the stand, and said he paid Abimbola for personal training services and nutritional advice.
