Junior doctors say the three-day strike next month will “bring hospitals to a standstill” but that drastic action is needed to help the NHS “stay afloat” for staff and patients connie_dimsdale reports:
Dr Maiya Anning, 25, who works on an elective surgery ward in the North West, said: “The wards are very full at the moment and I know A&E is extremely busy. Finding beds for patients and new admissions is difficult.”
“I also felt like junior doctors were being asked to take on more and more responsibility, and to some degree, I think that should be reflected in pay,” she added.“winter pressures” usually brought on by seasonal illnessesShe said that patients were being set up in “makeshift bays” in corridors, repurposed cupboards or bays with no equipment, meaning they sometimes lacked essential resources such as oxygen and monitoring equipment.
“There’s often more rota gaps than there are actual doctors on a rota,” Dr Manirajan said. “That means the doctors who are coming in to do shifts are often doing more work than ever before. We have an elderly, more sick population than ever before. The life expectancy in England is actually decreasing for the first time. What this means is doctors are leaving shift burned out, demoralised and they’re wanting to leave.
“The ward is busy and there are several patients who are fit for discharge but we can’t find a bed for them at intermediate care facilities where they need social care or rehabilitation so they stay on the wards and. And then as a result A&E is packed and people end up sitting in chairs for hours on end, not being seen when they need to be admitted.”
