Some 45,000 junior doctors in England will stage a 72-hour walkout in March that would spark chaos in A&E departments and see 200,000 appointments cancelled, if a majority support industrial action.

The title ‘junior doctor’ can refer to anyone below the level of consultant, from newly qualified medics to specialist registrars. They have anything up to eight years’ experience working as a hospital doctor, depending on their specialty, or up to three years in general practice. In 2016, more than 125,000 operations and appointments were cancelled when junior doctors staged the first full walk-out in the history of the health service, which lasted two days.

Addressing a young doctors’ conference in Bristol on Sunday, Professor Philip Banfield, chairman of the BMA, condemned Rishi Sunak and the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, for refusing to meet the terms of trade unions.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “The Health and Social Care Secretary has met with the BMA and other medical unions to discuss pay, conditions and workload. He’s been clear he wants to continue discussing how we can make the NHS a better place to work for all.”
