The event at Reservoir Park featured entertainment and was hosted by Young Professionals of Color-Greater Harrisburg (YPOC).
Ana White, one of the co-organizers of YPOC, pointed out the meaning behind Juneteenth and why it’s crucial for people of color.
“Juneteenth is about freedom but it’s also about taking control of your freedom. And I think that’s exactly what we did this week,” White said. “We had different events to showcase what Black culture can be, showing people where we should be, and just allowing people to have fullness of expression and the vastness of what Blackness is.”
The event showcased up to 30 small businesses and organizations and featured games, information on community resources and live entertainment. Performers gave it their all on stage as well; the mix of entertainment included DJ Lei Row and gospel music byShavonnah Jenkins, who attended the event promoting her small business, said the Juneteenth Jubilee allowed her to connect with residents. She advertised“This event has been awesome and the energy is great.
Elizabeth Campbell, who attended the event, said Juneteenth is all about unity. She came all the way from Tampa, Florida. “Events like these are important because it allows people to come together. It’s needed because we’re [Black people] separated from each other and that’s a problem,” Campbell said. “This kind of function allows people to be aware of what’s happening in the community from housing to even unity programs.”
