Una juez federal de San Diego dictaminó el jueves 12 de octubre que Matthew Taylor Coleman, propietario de una escuela de surf de Santa Bárbara y conspirador acusado de matar a sus dos hijos pequeños con un fusil submarino en México, no es competente para ser juzgado.

De acuerdo con la ley federal que regula la determinación de la competencia, el juez tuvo que concluir 'por prevalencia de las pruebas, que el acusado padece en la actualidad una enfermedad o defecto mental que le incapacita mentalmente hasta el punto de no poder comprender la naturaleza y las consecuencias del proceso que se sigue contra él o de colaborar adecuadamente en su defensa'.
