Judy Greer recalls Wes Craven's desire to create a fun environment on the Cursed set by passing out crosswords to everyone every morning. The 2005 horror comedy revolved around siblings Jimmy and Ellie Myers whose lives are upended when they are attacked by a werewolf in Los Angeles. The two must work together to find a way to stop their evolving werewolf abilities by finding the beast who attacked them and killing it.
Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg led the cast of Cursed as Ellie and Jimmy alongside Joshua Jackson, Judy Greer, Milo Ventimiglia, Kristina Anapau, Portia de Rossi, Shannon Elizabeth, Michael Rosenbaum and Eric Ladin. The film was set to serve as a reunion between Craven and Scream writer Kevin Williamson as well as studio Miramax Films, though it would ultimately suffer in development from Bob and Harvey Weinstein's frequent interferences.
“He printed out every single morning the New York Times crossword puzzle for everybody on set. There was a stack of them, and so every morning as everyone showed up for work, I can’t remember if it was his assistant or a script supervisor at the time, passed out the New York Times crossword puzzle. And so, we were all all day long working on the crossword puzzle. That was the thing we did all day as a family.
Greer's fun story of Wes Craven on the Cursed set may come as a sweet reminder of the celebrated filmmaker, but it's also likely to come as a disappointment to many remembering the turmoil he and his cast and crew endured with the movie.
Despite its various issues, Wes Craven's Cursed has since developed a cult following over the years with images and snippets of footage revealing looks at the director's original version for the film. Additionally, an unrated version of the film has received better reviews from audiences, though still generally seen as inferior to both Craven and Williamson's previous collaborations.
