Jones was one of three winners in the May primary for a Democratic city council nomination, and stands a near-certain chance of winning a council seat in November given Harrisburg’s heavily Democratic voter base. Jones, as well as the board of elections, argued that such an action by the court has no legal basis, given that statutory means to challenge candidates’ qualifications exist at the time they file their initial petitions. The plaintiffs neglected to do so, despite Jones’ record being well-known.
Jones received a letter of support for his pardon from Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo, the person with the most direct power to remove Jones from office based on his criminal record via aproceeding. “It’s not really about a past record,” Jones said when asked what he believed the impetus of the case was, adding that “I obviously pose a threat to the status quo.”
