Amanda Lee Cowan pleads to manslaughter after her former spouse was beaten and hacked to death by three of her accomplices in 2019
Cowan briefly escaped and barricaded himself in the bathroom, but was killed whenThe four co-accused intended to hide Derek’s body in a hockey bag, but were exposed when Amanda’s roommate arrived and called police. Amanda was initially charged with first-degree murder but pleaded to the lesser offence of manslaughter in early June.
Phillips told court his client has a “multitude” of mental health issues stemming from a difficult upbringing. He noted Derek had beena month prior to his death and was on a no-contact order when he visited the apartment. Cowan — who was pregnant — was released on house arrest during the first summer of the COVID pandemic.
