For Astros first baseman José Abreu, Chicago homecoming would be happier if he were hitting
After getting his first day off of the season Wednesday, first baseman Jose Abreu will be back in the lineup when the Astros visit the White Sox on Friday.More than a month into his tenure with the Astros, the highlights are few and far between for José Abreu, a slow starter in recent years who’s mired in arguably the worst start to a season in his decorated career.
Those cheers will not just be for his 2014 American League Rookie of the Year award or the 2020 AL MVP, but for things such as insisting he’d play — which he did — a day after a violent collision with Kansas City’s Hunter Dozier in May 2021 that left Abreu with a facial laceration and bruised knee. Not only did Abreu play the next day, but he homered as well.“Obviously, I’m very grateful for being there,” Abreu said through an interpreter this week during the Astros’ series in Anaheim, Calif.
“He’s so quiet, and he internalizes everything,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “I know it’s killing him not to be helping this team and not to perform.
