If you play your cards right, you just might get a chance to coach an NFL team under poor circumstances. But unless you’re damn near perfect, don’t expect to stick around for the long-term. And you may know your stuff, but don’t expect us to trust you with a prized young quarterback. Because there’s always a sexier option that looks more like the owner and is thus a smarter hire.
Wilks, of course, is not the only interim head coach who has failed to secure a promotion to the permanent job. Last winter, thepassed over Rich Bisaccia, who is White, after he coaxed Jon Gruden’s team to a 7-5 finish and its first playoff berth in five seasons. Josh McDaniels got the job instead. The fact is, a strong leader maintains success by developing his coaching staff just as he does his players. Given the way that Wilks weathered the storm he inherited, he likely would have found a solution.
