John Prine, a 'Songwriter's Songwriter,' is remembered here by his publisher, Downtown Music's JKalifowitz
, where Raitt, Norah Jones, Stephen Colbert and many others performed his songs — and he and Raitt capped off the night with his “Angel From Montgomery,” which she made a hit in the 1990s. He finished the night with a classic and characteristically self-deprecating comment: “This is kind of like singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to yourself.”Like many of you, I went to bed Tuesday night processing the tragic news of John Prine succumbing to complications from COVID-19.
Since Downtown Music Publishing began representing John’s songs, I can confirm that the appreciation for John I witnessed first-hand the night we met is pretty much the standard reaction. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris—the list of songwriters with their own critical and commercial successes who admire John’s gift is at least a mile long. Ask a songwriter to start talking about John’s influence on their craft and they’ll go on for days.
