Canley was awarded the country’s highest military honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.
According to the news outlet, Sgt. Maj. Canley was the first Black Marine to receive the country’s highest military honor, awarded by then President Donald Trump at the White House in October 2018.
"He repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to pull wounded Marines to safety," the society continued.RELATED: "Through his indominable spirit, expert fighting skills, and encouragement, his men were successful in their efforts," the society added.
