It is his second State of the Union address and his first before a divided Congress. The president did not mention the Chinese spy balloon that the US shot down over the weekend, but addressed China generally.‘Make no mistake about it, as we made it clear last week, if China threatens our sovereignty we will act to protect our country and we did,’ Biden said. Republicans boo-ed Biden when he claimed they are trying to sunset Medicare and Social Security. It was one of the more contentious moments of the address.
‘Public safety depends on public trust. But too often that trust is violated. Joining us tonight are the parents of Tyre Nichols, who had to bury him just last week,’ said Biden.‘What happened to Tyre in Memphis happens too often. We have to do better. Give law enforcement the real training they need,’ he said. ‘Hold on to higher standards. Help them succeed in keeping us safe.
